Pharmacotherapy of Tobacco Cessation

This continuing education course discusses pharmacological interventions to help your patients quit smoking or other tobacco use. The drugs currently available to support tobacco cessation are discussed in detail. This course was revised and updated in June 2008.

Course Need, Goal, Objectives, and Target Audience

Need: Clinicians need to know how to offer pharmacological interventions to patients who are quitting tobacco in order to improve abstinence rates.

Goal: The learner will be knowledgeable about providing pharmacological interventions for smoking cessation.

Objectives: After completing this course you will be able to
  • Use first-line smoking deterrent pharmacotherapies with patients and use second-line smoking deterrent pharmacotherapies as a back-up
  • Consider the indications and contraindications, special precautions, and warnings for use of first-line smoking deterrent pharmacotherapies when providing tobacco interventions
  • Consider the efficacy of first-line smoking deterrent pharmacotherapies when selecting one for a patient
  • Describe proper use of each form of smoking deterrent pharmacotherapy to patients
  • Consider the costs of various smoking deterrent pharmacotherapy treatments when selecting one for a patient
Audience: Physicians and other healthcare professionals, counselors, substance abuse workers, psychologists, and trainees in these fields. ACCME and NBCC credit are available.
