This continuing education course helps healthcare providers address the problem of cigar and pipe smoking in their patients. It presents the associated negative health effects and other issues that need to be addressed in order to help patients quit smoking these forms of tobacco.

Course Need, Goal, Objectives, and Target Audience

Need: Cigar and pipe smokers have some unique issues for health practitioners to consider when providing tobacco cessation interventions.

Goal: The learner will be knowledgeable about unique issues related to cigar and pipe use that should be considered when providing tobacco cessation interventions.

Objectives: After completing this course you will be able to
  • Describe prevalence, trends, and patterns of use for cigars and pipes
  • Describe the addictive potential of cigar and pipe smoking and appropriate clinical interventions
  • Describe the negative health effects of cigar and pipe smoking
  • Compare cigar and pipe smoking to cigarette smoking in terms of patterns of use, addiction, health effects, and mortality
Audience: Physicians and other healthcare professionals, counselors, substance abuse workers, psychologists, and trainees in these fields. ACCME and NBCC credit are available.

Obtaining CE credit for participation in this course requires that you are logged in, take the pre-test, view the course, take the post-test, satisfaction survey, and then request credit. To receive CE credit, you must answer at least 70% of the post-test questions correctly.
